From uptown to downtown, from basement to rooftop, from fire escape to terrace, New York City is a combustible feast, as well as a magnet for artists, travelers, movers and makers from all borders across the globe. From its inception, New York has been a cauldron for ideas and idolatry reflected on a canvas vast enough to cover its 13.4-mile wingspan.
During its nearly 500 years, this self-propelled and multidimensional utopia has seen its countless citizens represent every city, every country and every culture. Always relentless, ever enduring, New York is more than an island of metropolitan dreamers; it is "the dream," the urban centerpiece and axis of America's past, present and future tense. It's basically the world in a bottle - or as H.G. Wells once described it, the "gateway to the earth."
Drawing from BIG Magazine's 24 year history of featuring some of the most iconic and emerging talents from the disciplines of art, film, photography, fashion, design and sports, we now turn the focus on New York.
Through a lens of authenticity, high-level imagery and seasoned insight, we will create a bold and emblematic mosaic of reportage photography, striking portraiture, interviews, and written articles that will chronicle one of the world's most storied cities and the landmark personalities who have built its human foundation. In addition, this project will aim to tell
a vital part of New York's history, from its early days of resilience and struggle to its current ranking as a global epicenter.
Welcome to Big New York City.
