About the Book

Beyond the Crumbling Heights, while laying bare the social ills prevailing in the society, is the story of a slum boy, who in spite of living in a home where violence is of frequent occurrence, and life is full of trials and hardships, lives a straight, honest life, till an urgent need steers him to crime. Soon he enters a world of unique criminal set-up where he finds glamour and luxury. A bite of fate takes him to the realm of religious fanaticism where his psyche is molded to do whatever his religious mentors want him to do. Escaping from there he finds himself face to face with death, devastation and crumbling heights all over. To go beyond the crumbling heights is his only salvation, but the steps leading to the salvation are shaky....
About the Author: Chicago based free-lance writer, Rafiq Ebrahim Valjee began writing as a hobby in Pakistan, and when his first short story, a humorous one, appeared in Morning News, a leading daily, he was encouraged to devote more time to writing. This was followed by a number of stories and articles published in various newspapers and magazines. He has also written two novels, Glowing Embers, a 1967 love story, and Advertising - the Other Side, a projection of a darker side of the glamorous world of advertising. Though being a Science Graduate from the University of Karachi, he entered the field of advertising as a copywriter and accounts executive. He, however, found time to continue writing for newspapers and journals. In 1990, he along with his family migrated to United States, where he could find neither a market nor time to write. He started working as a Retail Manager in a large departmental store. Ten years later, the bug of writing again bit him, and he began writing for Dawn News, Karachi's leading newspaper, The Friday Times, Lahore, The Pakistan Link, USA and a few other papers. Returning from a visit to his homeland in the early 2007, he was much affected by the poverty-ridden people he came across there, and the slums where they lived in. He wrote a number of articles on the conditions prevailing in places where down-trodden people live, and appealed to the government and the elite class to help alleviate poverty. He also started writing his third novel, Beyond the Crumbling Heights, which was completed in January, 2009.
