Once a leader of the Turncoat rebellion, then a reluctant but ruthless killing machine, Rory Reed had settled into the 'quiet' life of training the militia of Franklin, Texas. Still fighting for the cause in his own, local, way Reed finds himself recruited to take up the cause again.
Only this time billionaire LF Winston has bought the cause, underwriting One World. This time, Winston claims, there will be no betrayals. This time it will succeed, and Rory Reed wants to be there when it does.
If it does...
Reed has hardly accepted the offer and the Winstons are fending off death threats and car bombs. Corporate and supernatural powers press them into hiding, then on to a global mission Reed admits he may not be up to:
"This one's more than blood and brawn," Rory said. "I'm out of my element."
"Just another caper, pal. Like you said, our last huzzah."
"A caper with time travelers and gypsies and zombie drugs and airships as big as the sky," Rory said. "That about sum it up?"
"Well, when you put it like that--"
"All the while, working within the straitjacket of high society, corporate empires, and rich nut jobs."
"You left out beautiful women," Alex countered, "and a crack team you can depend on."
"Oh... and a dragon. There's a dragon back at the cave," Rory added. "Beat that."
"What if I could beat that?" Alex asked, raising his eyebrows.
"Let's hear it." Rory sat back and folded his arms.
Alex cleared his throat and spoke in a powerful, theatrical tone: "The fate of mankind hangs in the balance. The love of your life is counting on you."
"You're just making that up about the fate of mankind."
"Am I?"
"And just ask her--Ashley Winston, doesn't count on anyone but herself."
Get Bewildered because these characters won't disappoint! Near-future sci-fi at its finest.
