Seine Recherchen machen große Teile einer apologetischen oder schwärmerischen Beuys-Literatur zur Makulatur. Eduard Beaucamp Riegels Buch setzt den Maßstab für eine historisch-kritische Auseinandersetzung mit Joseph Beuys. Man muss es lesen, man muss es genau lesen. Der Mann war kein Ewiggestriger, er war Avantgarde und Anachronismus zugleich, ein Mensch, der die Widersprüche des 20. Jahrhunderts in sich trug und sie dann, und das ist wohl der entscheidende Punkt, produktiv machte. Er wirkt nach. Boris Pofalla, DIE WELT Umgab sich Joseph Beuys mit ehemaligen Nationalsozialisten? Der Autor Hans Peter Riegel (....) kommt zu dem Fazit, dass der ehemalige Hitlerjunge und Berufssoldat - der Kameradschaftsabende seiner Stuka-Einheit auf der Krim besuchte - eine unheimliche Nähe zu ehemaligen Nationalsozialsten, Anthroposophen und Vertretern völkischen Gedankenguts pflegte. Ich wollte zuerst, um ehrlich zu sein, nur einige Kapitel lesen, das Buch überfliegen, aber ich war schließlich so gefesselt, dass ich die ganze Biografie von über 600 Seiten von Anfang bis Ende mit großer Spannung gelesen habe. Der Theologe Hans Küng, Deutschlandradio Riegels Buch ist auch dort interessant, wo Beuys eigentlich eine Nebenrolle spielt, nämlich bei der Entstehung der Grünen Partei. Riegel beschreibt, wie die Grünen nicht nur aus Linken, sondern ziemlich stark aus rechtsnationalen Kreisen hervorgegangen sind, die sich Ökologie, Natur und Lebensschutz ins Parteiprogramm geschrieben haben.
