Vor noch gut einem Jahr waren Aussagen wie diese beinahe täglich den verschiedensten Medien zu entnehmen. Autoren, Redakteure und Börsenanalysten überboten sich mit Superlativen und erzeugten so einen bis dato einmaligen Hype. Unternehmen der so genannten "New Economy" erzielten Börsenwerte, die mit mehreren Milliarden Euro Marktkapitalisierung teilweise den Wert großer etablierter und seit Jahrzehnten profitabler Unternehmen der "Old Economy" überstiegen. Doch die Realität holte viele Shop-Betreiber ein. Seit einigen Monaten stehen Schließungen und Insolvenzen von Online-Shops an der Tagesordnung, da interessante Geschäftsideen kein Garant für die Wirtschaftlichkeit eines Unternehmens sind und die Aufwendungen in keinem Verhältnis zu den Erlösen stehen. C&A, Vitago, eToys, Lion.cc und Letsbuyit.com sind nur einige prominente Beispiele. Hunderte weitere Online-Händler stehen ebenfalls vor dem Aus. Pessimisten verkünden nun genau umgekehrt den Tod des eCommerce und der "New Economy", vor allem im Bereich des Handels mit dem Endkunden (Business-to-Consumer). Aus dem anfänglichen Hype wird nun ein Negativ-Hype. Sowohl die anfängliche Überschätzung als auch die momentan übertriebene Skepsis gegenüber dem eCommerce entsprechen nicht der tatsächlichen Situation des Internet-Handels. Es ist Fakt, dass durch das Aufkommen des Internets ein neuer Vertriebsweg entstanden ist, der zahlreiche neue Möglichkeiten und Chancen bietet und stark an Bedeutung zunehmen wird.
