Hierzu werden Begriffe wie Disziplin, Unterrichtsstörungen und Sanktionen definiert. Anhand von zwei im Anhang befindlichen Unterrichtsbeobachtungsprotokollen werden Analysen angefertigt und miteinander verglichen. Die Erkenntnisse daraus werden diskutiert und es wird herausgestellt, wodurch Unterrichtsstörungen entstehen und wie diese vermindert werden können. Unterricht läuft nicht immer störungsfrei ab, weswegen dieser Sachverhalt in der Literatur Gegenstand unzähliger Werke ist. Unterrichtsstörungen können, neben externen Faktoren, sowohl durch das Verhalten von Schüler*innen als auch von Lehrer*innen ausgelöst werden. Diese können beispielsweise in Form eines Gesprächs zwischen zwei Schüler*innen bis hin zu aggressiven Verhalten viele Facetten annehmen. Oft verorten Lehrkräfte die Störungen jedoch bei ihren Schüler*innen und weniger bei sich selbst, was ein weit verbreitetes Problem darstellt. Es scheinen also Verhaltensweisen zu sein, die den schulinstitutionell aufgestellten Regeln und Normen widerstreben. Hierbei fällt oft das Wort Disziplin und einhergehend damit auch die Nennung von Disziplinschwierigkeiten und -konflikten bei Nichteinhaltung dieser Regeln. Als Gegenmaßnahme werden meist Sanktionen erhoben, wie Ermahnungen oder Tadel. Der Unterricht stellt eine Kommunikationssituation dar, an der zwei ungleiche Parteien - die Lehrkraft als Autoritätsperson bzw. Lehrende*r und die Schüler*innen als die zu unterweisenden Lernenden - teilnehmen. Kommunikation findet immer sowohl in Sprache als auch in Verhalten statt und kann nicht unterbunden werden.
