Lernen ist die wichtigste Aufgabe in jedem menschlichen Leben und beginnt bereits in diesem Alter. Aus diesem Grund ist es wichtig, dass die Kinder in einer elementaren Bildungseinrichtung gut aufgehoben sind. Zu Beginn unseres Lebens geht es darum die Dinge zu lernen, die das Überleben sichern. In vielen Kindergärten lehrt man aber bestimmte Grundfähigkeiten fernab jeglicher Realität und der elementare Bildungsbereich gleicht einer Schule. In einem noch relativ neuen Ansatz - dem offenen Kindergarten - hingegen richtet sich das Lehren und Lernen auf einen selbstständigen Kompetenzerwerb für künftige Lebenssituationen. Es wird die Individualität eines jeden einzelnen Kindes gefördert, sowie ein Bezug zum Alltag hergestellt. "Entwicklungsprozesse von Kindern basieren auf praktischen Erfahrungen und hieraus resultierenden Erkenntnissen" (Bartsch-Tegtbauer/Brambrink et al. 1998, S.3). Eine Kindertageseinrichtung muss den Kindern also genug Freiraum bieten, dass sie sich selbst frei entfalten können und ihre eigenen Erfahrungen machen können, um daraus zu lernen, vor allem auch für ihr späteres Leben. Weiters müssen sie lernen, dass ihre Entscheidungen Konsequenzen mit sich ziehen können und diese gegebenenfalls akzeptieren. Nur wenn sie diese Erfahrungen selbst machen, also indirekt lernen, können sie für ihr zukünftiges Leben profitieren. Die Kinder ziehen viele Vorteile aus diesem neuen Ansatz. Aber gibt es auch Nachteile? Was müssen die pädagogischen Fachkräfte beachten? Gibt es spezielle Materialien und muss der Kindergarten eigene räumliche Kapazitäten besitzen?
