Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Schon im alten Ägypten, China und auch Arabien wurden Dokumente über bewegte Bilder gefunden. Die ersten Versuche damit machte aber wohl der deutsche Gelehrte Athanasius Kircher im 17. Jahrhundert. Er entwickelte eine sogenannte „Laterna Magica", mit der selbstgezeichnete Bilder an die Wand projiziert werden konnten. Dies wurde über ca. 200 Jahre zur Belustigung des Volkes auf Jahrmärkten weitergeführt und entwickelt, bis 1830 Louis Jacques- Mande Daguerre die erste Photographie durch eine mit Jodsilber beschichtete Metallplatte in einer Lochkamera, der „Camera Obscura", erstellte. Darauf folgten viele Erfindungen, der erste richtige Filmprojektor jedoch war der „Cinematograph" von Auguste und Louis Lumiere. Die erste Filmvorführung am 28. Dezember 1895 war die Geburtsstunde des Kinos. 1908 gingen schon 10 Millionen Amerikaner ins Kino, das sie damals noch Nickelodeon nannten, da der Eintritt genau einen Nickel betrug. Das erste Jahrzehnt des Kinofilmes wurde von französischen Filmen dominiert. Dann allerdings wurde in den USA 1908 die Motion Pictures Patents Company gegründet, ein Kartell zur gemeinsamen Kontrolle von Patentrechten. Dies veranlasste unabhängige Produzenten in den Vereinigten Staaten nach Kalifornien umzuziehen, da sie dort die teuren Lizenzgebühren umgehen konnten und auch billigere Arbeitskräfte in dem ehemals mexikanischen Kalifornien zu bekommen waren. Diese unabhängigen Produzenten wurden jedoch erst mächtig als das MPPC als illegal verurteilt wurde. Aus den kalifornischen Produzenten, meist jüdischer Abstammung, wurden mächtige Hollywoodfirmen wie Paramount und MGM, die auch heute noch existieren. Dies war der Anfang einer großen Zeit für Hollywood, Stars wie Charlie Chaplin, der 1912 seinen ersten großen Film machte, Humphrey Bogart, 1940, und auch Charlton Heston, 1959, wurden geboren.
