Die Auseinandersetzung mit der Forschungsfrage geschieht anhand von drei Theoriesträngen, die in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur vorherrschen: der ökonomischen, der soziologischen sowie der psychologischen Perspektive. Jede dieser Theoriestränge rückt bestimmte Einflussfaktoren ins Zentrum, mithilfe derer die berufliche Geschlechtersegregation fundiert erläutert wird. Aufgrund der Theorienpluralität innerhalb eines Stranges fokussiert sich diese Arbeit auf die in der wissenschaftlichen Rezeption anerkanntesten Ansätze: Die Humankapitaltheorie, die Sozialisationstheorie sowie die Eingrenzungs- und Kompromisstheorie der Berufswahl werden im Folgenden vorgestellt und anschließend auf ihre empirische Gültigkeit überprüft. Zur Beantwortung der vorliegenden Forschungsfrage wurde ein deskriptives Verfahren gewählt, um einen Überblick über die bedeutendsten Theorien sowie den aktuellen Forschungsstand zu geben. Diese Arbeit konzentriert sich zunächst auf das Phänomen der beruflichen GS und erläutert in diesem Rahmen unter anderem relevante Termini, Messverfahren sowie die historische Entwicklung. In einem nächsten Schritt werden sowohl nachfrage- als auch angebotsseitige Berufswahltheorien vorgestellt und kritisch diskutiert. Auf dieser Basis erfolgt die Herausbildung der Hypothesen, die anhand von anschließend dargestellten Forschungsarbeiten überprüft werden. Ein Fazit fasst schließlich die wichtigsten Erkenntnisse der Arbeit zusammen.
