Nicht nur in der Bundesrepublik wurde uber die 'gemordete Stadt' und die 'Unwirtlichkeit unserer Stadte' geklagt. Auch in Ost-Berlin - und das mag angesichts von scheinbar dominierenden Plattenbauten uberraschen - entstanden Alternativen zur funktionalistischen Moderne. In den 1970er und 80er Jahren setzte sich das Konzept einer 'historischen Stadt' durch. Damit nahmen DDR-Architekten und Stadtplaner eine internationale stadtebauliche Leitidee auf. In der Folge wurden einige der jahrzehntelang vernachlassigten Grunderzeitviertel in den Bezirken Mitte und Prenzlauer Berg saniert und mit neuen Insignien imaginarer Stadtgeschichte ausgeschmuckt. Gleichzeitig errichtete man im Nikolaiviertel, am Platz der Akademie (Gendarmenmarkt) und in der Friedrichstrasse reprasentative Bauten, die sich an historische Bauformen anlehnten, dazu jedoch Fertigbauteile aus Beton verwendeten. Das Buch scharft den Blick fur die DDR-spezifischen Reaktionen der Stadtplaner auf die international virulenten zeitgenossischen Diskussionen zu Architektur und Stadt, befeuert durch die aufbluhenden Sozialwissenschaften. Anregend und provozierend sind die Thesen von Florian Urban zu einem anderen Bild im Bauen der DDR neben den Grossserien der Platte allemal. Schliesslich machen sie darauf aufmerksam, dass es dort mehr gab, als die abschatzig als Arbeiterschliessfacher bezeichneten Wohnungen auf der grussen Wiese. About the Author: Florian Urban, geb. 1970 in Munchen, studierte freie Kunst an der Hochschule der Kunste Berlin, Stadtplanung an der University of California in Los Angeles und promovierte 2006 in History and Criticism of Architecture am Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Er ist Professor fur Architekturgeschichte an der Glasgow School of Art. Zuletzt erschien von ihm 'Tower and Slab - Histories of Global Mass Housing' (2012).
