About the Book

De hoofdpersoon Beowulf, een held van de Geats, komt te hulp bij Hrothgar, de koning van de Denen, wiens grote zaal, Heorot, wordt geplaagd door het monster Grendel . Beowulf doodt Grendel met zijn blote handen en doodt vervolgens Grendel's moeder met een gigantisch zwaard dat hij in haar hol vond.Later in zijn leven, Beowulf wordt koning van de Geats, en vindt zijn rijk geterroriseerd door een draak, waarvan een deel van zijn schat is gestolen uit zijn schat in een grafheuvel. Hij valt de draak aan met de hulp van zijn thegns of bedienden, maar dat lukt niet. Beowulf besluit de draak te volgen naar zijn hol in Earnanæs, maar alleen zijn jonge Zweedse familielid Wiglaf, wiens naam "overblijfsel van moed" betekent, [a] durft zich bij hem aan te sluiten. Beowulf doodt uiteindelijk de draak, maar raakt dodelijk gewond in de strijd. Hij wordt gecremeerd en ter ere van hem wordt een grafheuvel aan zee opgericht.Beowulf wordt beschouwd als een episch gedicht in die zin dat de hoofdpersoon een held is die grote afstanden aflegt om zijn kracht te bewijzen met onmogelijke tegenslagen tegen bovennatuurlijke demonen en beesten. Het gedicht begint in medias res of simpelweg "in het midden van de dingen", een kenmerk van de heldendichten uit de oudheid. Hoewel het gedicht begint met de komst van Beowulf, zijn de aanvallen van Grendel aan de gang. Er wordt gesproken over een uitgebreide geschiedenis van karakters en hun afstammelingen, evenals hun interacties met elkaar, verschuldigde en terugbetaalde schulden en daden van dapperheid. De krijgers vormen een broederschap die door loyaliteit aan hun heer is verbonden. Het gedicht begint en eindigt met begrafenissen: aan het begin van het gedicht voor Scyld Scefing [19] en aan het einde voor Beowulf. [20]Het gedicht is strak gestructureerd. E. Carrigan toont de symmetrie van het ontwerp in een model van de belangrijkste componenten, waarbij bijvoorbeeld het verslag van het doden van Grendel overeenkomt met dat van het doden van de draak, de glorie van de Denen overeenkomt met de verslagen van de Deense en Geatish hoven .
