Genio es aquel que es extremadamente útil a su sociedad. El concepto fundamentalmente implícito entonces en la genialidad es la utilidad. Si se considera que el ser humano es un ser social, sus actos están potenciados por su interés individual pero también por un interés solidario hacia el prójimo. Es allí donde el genio destaca por sobre el resto, por su interés en el bien común - el suyo y el del otro - a través de una gran capacidad por resolver problemas comunes. Franklin llenará con creces esta definición y la utilidad, las ideas simples y el bien común serán el norte de su larga y pródiga existencia. No dudará en regalar a la Junta, entidad de notables burgueses de la sociedad de Philadelphia creada a sus instancias un sistema para ahorrar carbón, bien escaso y crítico para los rigurosos inviernos de Nueva Inglaterra y evitar el ingreso de humo en las viviendas; idea simple e inspirada. Su preocupación por adaptar la actividad humana al paisaje natural lo llevará a sugerir el corrimiento de la hora de los relojes para un mejor aprovechamiento de la luz solar. Con el mismo ánimo simplificador y práctico hará entendible y popular la nomenclatura de las cargas eléctricas, acercando la utilidad de los fenómenos de la electricidad al saber popular. Su filosofía y su mirada de la religión son a la distancia menos evidentes para el investigador. A su reserva natural se le suma la prudencia para abordar asuntos tan personales y espinosos - por así decirlo - en la consideración pública, maleable opinión de un vulgo que, a pesar de la ilustración y los fuertes anhelos de fraternidad imperantes en el siglo XVIII, sigue siendo mayoritariamente iletrado. Aunque imbuido de la veneración por la naturaleza y de cierto panteísmo inherente a los filósofos de la ilustración, su visión será básicamente utilitaria, y sus escritos dejarán ver su aceptación de la modificación del entorno natural en aras del progreso y el bienestar humano, por lo que mal puede ser catalogado como un naturalista. Adhería a una visión deísta imperante en la época, pero con cierto respeto por algunos predicadores y algunas formas tradicionales de culto, lo que lo transforma en el más piadoso o moderado de los deístas. Sostenedor de las ideas pitagóricas de la transmigración de las almas y del método inductivo de instrucción socrática, su visión religiosa también es compleja y única en comparación con su época, inmersa en un constante enfrentamiento de dicotomías excluyentes y a menudo irreconciliables. Será alternativamente el burgués respetuosos de la religión por su coincidencia con los cuáqueros o el líder de opinión social anticlerical y contestatario con el (Courant), será el inglés ilustrado más permeable a la reforma para incluir a las colonias en el sistema parlamentario del naciente imperio o el líder independentista que batallará en la mesa de negociaciones para la firma del tratado que reconocerá a los nacientes Estados Unidos, fruto de un proyecto constitucional quimérico que dará forma a la versión americana de la Revolución Francesa... Esta profundidad intelectual y su complejo pensamiento sólo podría comprenderse a la luz del análisis de las tensiones y sucesos de su época y lo que en principio parece contradictorio encajará perfectamente en la mirada sabia del genio. Franklin es un hijo cabal del siglo XVIII con su idealismo humanista y romántico, con una confianza serena y positiva respecto del potencial del hombre para dominar las fuerzas de la naturaleza y abatir los privilegios con la portentosa fuerza de la razón. Dicha confianza, aunque en parte quimérica, se perderá con pesar en los siglos siguientes.
