Bientôt, les balayeuses et les frotteurs qui, ce jour-là, n'accomplissaient que fort distraitement leur besogne, s'approchaient d'eux, afin d'écouter leur conversation, qui ne pouvait manquer d'être fort intéressante. - Moi, je te dis que c'est un fantôme ! scandait l'un des gardiens. Et tandis que son collègue éclatait de rire et haussait les épaules, il martelait avec un accent de conviction sous lequel perçait un certain émoi: - Gautrais l'a vu !... Et c'est pas un blagueur ni un poltron !... Même qu'il est en train de faire son rapport à M. le conservateur ! C'était exact. Dans le bureau de ce haut fonctionnaire, Pierre Gautrais, un grand gaillard solide, robuste, aux épaules carrées, à la figure franche et un peu naïve, déclarait à son supérieur, M. Lavergne, qui, assis devant sa table de travail et flanqué de son adjoint et de son secrétaire, l'écoutait d'un air bienveillant mais plutôt sceptique: - Je l'ai vu comme je vous vois !... Je me laisserais plutôt couper la tête que de dire le contraire. - Dites-moi, Gautrais... Vous n'aviez pas bu un petit coup de trop ? observait M. Lavergne. - Oh ! Monsieur le conservateur sait bien que je ne me grise jamais ! protestait Pierre Gautrais. - Alors, vous avez eu une hallucination. - Oh ! non, monsieur... J'étais bien réveillé, bien maître de moi. Je suis un ancien soldat... et je puis dire, sans me vanter, que je n'ai jamais eu peur, même lorsque, à Verdun, les marmites me tombaient sur la tête dru comme grêle... Eh bien ! je n'hésite pas à vous avouer que, rien que de penser à ce que j'ai vu la nuit dernière, dans la salle des Dieux barbares... cela me fait courir un frisson dans le dos et dresser mes cheveux sur ma tête ! - Quelle heure était-il quand ce phénomène s'est produit ? interrogeait le conservateur-adjoint. - Une heure du matin, monsieur Rabusson, répliquait le gardien. J'étais en train de faire ma ronde dans les salles du rez-de-chaussée qui donnent sur le bord de l'eau, lorsque, tout à coup, en arrivant dans la salle des Dieux barbares, j'aperçois une forme humaine qui, enveloppée d'un suaire noir et coiffée d'une sorte de capuchon, me tournait le dos et se tenait debout auprès de la statue de Belphégor... Arthur Bernède, né à Redon (Ille-et-Vilaine) le 5 janvier 1871 et mort à Paris le 20 mars 1937, est un romancier populaire français. Auteur très prolifique, il a publié près de 200 romans d'aventures et d'histoire et créé plusieurs centaines de personnages romanesques, dont certains, devenus très célèbres, tels que Belphégor, Judex et Mandrin, ont effacé leur créateur. Il a également mis en scène Vidocq, inspiré par les exploits de ce chef de la Sûreté haut en couleur. Il est également connu sous les noms de plume de Jean de la Périgne et de Roland d'Albret.
