Résumé En 1663, à 18 ans, Jacques demande Suzanne en mariage mais son père lui dit qu'il n'est pas assez riche et noble. Suzanne et Jacques se promettent de s'attendre et Jacques part à Paris. Il devient soldat sous le nom de Belle-Rose et fait des études. Suzanne lui écrit que son père l'a mariée à Monsieur d'A. Jacques s'éprend de Mme de Chateaufort. Il est accusé de désertion et condamné à mort mais acquitté in extremis et promu lieutenant. En 1667, il va combattre les espagnols en Flandre avec le général de Luxembourg. Sa soeur Claudine lui donne une lettre de Suzanne qui lui dit qu'elle est toujours amoureuse de lui. M d'A meurt. Lors d'une mission confiée par M de L, Jacques est embastillé mais Suzanne le fait libérer mais se fait mettre dans un couvent. Jacques la libère. Ils vont chez Mme de Chateaufort, s'épousent et ont Geneviève. Mme de Chateaufort est empoisonnée. En 1672, Louis XVI envahit la Hollande, Jacques trouve un gué sur le Rhin et devient capitaine et vicomte. Il tue l'empoisonneur de Mme de Chateaufort.
About the Author: Louis Amédée Eugène Achard, né à Marseille le 22 avril 1814 et mort à Paris le 25 mars 1875, est un romancier et auteur dramatique français Amédée Achard a fait ses études au lycée Thiers de Marseille[1]. Après un court séjour près d'Alger, où il dirige une ferme, puis à Toulouse, où il est employé au cabinet du préfet, il est journaliste à Marseille au Sémaphore pour lequel il écrit nombre d'articles, billets et chroniques. Arrivé à Paris, il collabore au Vert-Vert, puis à L'Entracte, au Charivari et à L'Époque, écrivant à la fois pour lui-même et pour ses collègues journalistes en panne d'inspiration. Il collabore ensuite au journal satirique Le Pamphlet. Il provoque en duel un dénommé Fiorentino qui l'avait diffamé. Au cours de ce duel, il est gravement blessé. Encore convalescent, il part en Italie avec l'armée française pour couvrir la guerre pour le Journal des débats. Achard écrit énormément. En plus de son activité de journaliste, il trouve le temps d'écrire une quinzaine de pièces de théâtre et une quarantaine de romans, parmi lesquels de nombreux romans de cape et d'épée. On lui prête à tort la paternité de cette expression, que Ponson du Terrail avait employée avant lui, mais son roman intitulé La Cape et l'Épée, paru en 1875, en fait un des pères du genre. Il était admiré en cela par Alexandre Dumas. Amédée Achard est inhumé au cimetière du Père-Lachaise à Paris (85e division): le monument funéraire, élevé à sa mémoire par la Société des gens de lettres et la Société des Auteurs dramatiques, est orné d'un médaillon du au sculpteur Louis-Charles Janson.
