Die Zunahme an beruflichen Belastungen im Lehrberuf, mit denen LehrerInnen innerhalb ihrer Tätigkeit in der Schule konfrontiert werden, scheint stetig zuzunehmen. Nicht selten scheitert das Bemühen der Lehrkräfte um eine optimale Erfüllung der an sie gestellten, beruflichen Anforderungen und dienstlichen Verpflichtungen trotz Anstrengung und größtem Engagement. In Konsequenz dessen ergibt sich eine messbare Zunahme von Frustration, Berufsunzufriedenheit, bis hin zu völliger Resignation und Burnout-Phänomenen. In Deutschland erreichen beispielsweise nur noch rund 20-25% aller Lehrkräfte das Pensionsalter. Ein großer Teil der Lehrkräfte quittiert den Schuldienst bereits frühzeitig aus meist gesundheitlichen Gründen. Der Lehrberuf zählt damit maßgeblich zu den belastenden und gesundheitsgefährdenden Berufskategorien. Die Rahmenbedingungen für Bildung, Unterricht und Erziehung sind innerhalb deutscher Schulen oftmals weder für SchülerInnen noch für deren Lehrkräfte förderlich. Damit werden große Schulklassen von bis zu 32 SchülerInnen sowie die Reduzierung finanzieller- wie materieller Ressourcen der Schulen nicht selten für beide Parteien zum Problem. Aufgrund institutioneller Rahmenbedingungen ist es für Lehrerinnen und Lehrer oft kein leichtes Unterfangen Verhaltensauffälligkeiten oder Entwicklungsstörungen der Kinder und Jugendlichen aufzufangen und auszugleichen. Die Lehrerschaft, wie auch die Institution Schule, ist daher seit geraumer Zeit sehr stark in die Kritik der Eltern und der Öffentlichkeit geraten. Durch die Veröffentlichung von Erhebungsdaten und Ergebnisdarstellungen internationaler schulischer Vergleichsstudien wie PISA ist das Schulsystem der Bundesrepublik Deutschland zunehmend angezweifelt worden.
