Bereits im 6. Jahrhundert vor Christus entwickelte sich in Griechenland parallel zur Polis und zum Politikbegriff der Begriff der politischen Freiheit (vgl. Greven 2007: 159). Die Polis von Athen konstituierte sich damals zunehmend als Bürgerschaft von Freien - was zunächst den Adel und die Bauern betraf - welche sich selbst Gesetze gaben (vgl. Greven 2007: 159). Die politische Freiheit blieb jedoch auf das öffentliche Leben beschränkt und stellte lediglich ein Privileg der männlichen und besitzenden Vollbürger dar (vgl. Greven 2007: 160). Demnach hat der Freiheitsbegriff eine lange Tradition in der abendländischen Philosophie, weshalb es sinnvoll erscheint, einen der bekanntesten Autoren der Neuzeit dahingehend näher zu betrachten. In dieser Abhandlung soll deshalb der englische Philosoph Thomas Hobbes hinsichtlich der von ihm verwendeten Freiheitskonzeption untersucht werden. Die zugrunde liegende Arbeitshypothese unterstellt Hobbes die Kennzeichnung eines überwiegend negativen Freiheitsbegriffes, wobei die Existenz eines Momentes der positiven Freiheit vermutet wird. Um das Thema "Der Begriff der Freiheit bei Thomas Hobbes" möglichst genau zu bearbeiten, sollen im zweiten Kapitel die Begriffe negative und positive Freiheit eine Erklärung und Definition erhalten, wobei vor allem die Unterscheidung von Isaiah Berlin (1958) berücksichtigt wird. Als Grundlage für diese Unterscheidung wird eine Abhandlung von Ian Carter (2007) verwendet. Im anschließenden dritten Kapitel wird dann der Naturzustand nach Hobbes, unter der Frage, ob Freiheit im selbigen vorhanden sei, untersucht. Dabei wird besonderer Fokus auf das Indi
