Diese enge Verwobenheit der Aufgaben unterstreicht die hohe Verantwortung und die Anforderungen in diesem Berufsfeld. Der profession kann folglich als einer der Schlüsselberufe im gesellschaftlichen Rahmenkomplex gesehen werden. Die Etablierung und Entwicklung der Lehrerschaft ist dependent von dem Entwicklungsprozess des Bildungswesens. Bildungssysteme gelten als "institutionelle Akteure der Menschenbildung" . Der Lehrer ist hierbei einer der Hauptakteure. Dies war jedoch nicht immer so. Zahlreiche essentielle historische Ereignisse, soziale Einstellungen und Ideen sowie mehrere Komponenten und Impulse haben diesen Prozess begleitet und Einfluss genommen. Die Aufgabe dieser Arbeit ist es, aufzuzeigen, welche elementaren Merkmale und Prozesse sich in der Geschichte finden und rekonstruieren lassen, welche die Professionalisierung und Ständewerdung der Lehrerschaft eingeleitet haben. Eine historische Eingrenzung und Fokussierung bildet den theoretischen Rahmen: Es wird die Wende des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts zentralisiert, da die Anfänge hier anzusiedeln sind. Weiterhin wird die Aufmerksamkeit auf die Lehrerschaft der höheren Schulen in Preußen gerichtet, da dieser deutsche Bundesstaat oftmals eine führende Rolle und Vorbildfunktion eingenommen hatte.
