Die Zahl der Internetnutzer steigt jährlich kontinuierlich an und die Menschen sind immer häufiger und immer länger online. Durch eine immer großflächigere globale Vernetzung wird den Menschen das Leben enorm erleichtert. Alles kann bequem und schnell von zuhause aus erledigt werden. Mit nur wenigen Klicks können Waren und Dienstleistungen einfach geordert werden. Für Unternehmen ist es von enormer Wichtigkeit, Marketing zu betreiben, um neue Kunden zu gewinnen und somit ihren Umsatz zu steigern. Die Produktpalette wird immer breiter, dadurch erhält der potenzielle Abnehmer eine immer größer werdende Produktvielfalt zur Auswahl. Der Kampf um die Kunden wird größer, aufwendiger und vielschichtiger. Die zunehmende Digitalisierung der heutigen Welt bietet für ein Unternehmen die Chance, Marketingmaßnahmen in der digitalen Welt zu betreiben. Früher ist dies nur offline möglich gewesen. Diese, vergleichsweise neue Marketingmaßnahme, bezeichnet man als Online-Marketing.
