Zur Zeit sind 74% aller deutschen Internetnutzer in sozialen Netzwerken angemeldet, davon nutzen zwei Drittel sie aktiv. Dabei verzeichnet der Bereich der 14-29-Jährigen mit 85% der aktiven Social Media-Nutzer den größten Anteil, es folgen mit 65% die 30-49-Jährigen, die Generation 50-plus stellt immerhin noch einen Anteil von 46%. Doch es bleibt nicht nur bei einer Nutzung sozialer Netzwerke innerhalb des Privatlebens, auch das Berufsleben findet mehr und mehr Beachtung im kommunikativen Austausch zwischen den Social Media-Nutzer. Es besteht die Möglichkeit sich über einen potentiellen Arbeitgeber über das unternehmenseigene Profil zu informieren oder auch den Kontakt zu Mitarbeitern des Unternehmens zwecks Erfahrungsaustausch zu suchen. Auch Unternehmen haben bereits den Trend der sozialen Netzwerke für sich erkannt. Bislang zeigte sich die Entwicklung des Engagements der Unternehmen in erster Linie in dem Bereich des Marketings, speziell in der Werbung und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit. Aber auch der Bereich des Recruitings findet Beachtung in der Social Media Strategie. So verfügen zur Zeit 47% der deutschen Unternehmen über eine Präsenz in sozialen Netzwerken. BMW beispielsweise beschäftigte sich bereits frühzeitig mit den Social Media Trend, insbesondere Facebook, und nutzt ihn zum Beispiel sehr aktiv zur Mitarbeiter- und vor allen Dingen Nachwuchsgewinnung Dennoch herrschen auf Unternehmensseite, besonders in mittelständischen Unternehmen, noch häufig Bedenken gegen diese Entwicklung.
