Schnitzlers "Traumnovelle" und Stanley Kubricks "Eyes Wide Shut" sowie Kleists "Michael Kohlhaas" und Arnaud des Pallières' gleichnamige, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Maske ist eines der zentralen Leitmotive in Arthur Schnitzlers 1926 erschienener Traumnovelle. Auch in der Verfilmung von Stanley Kubrick unter dem Namen Eyes Wide Shut (Erscheinungsjahr 1999) hat die Maske eine elementare Relevanz. Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt auf, welche Bedeutung die Maske symbolisiert und inwiefern die Maske für den Handlungsverlauf eine Bedeutung hat. In den bislang veröffentlichten Werken, die Vergleiche zwischen Film und Novelle angestellt haben, hat sich vor allem Julia Freytag hervorgetan. Sie vertritt die Theorie, dass die Maske neben dem Gesicht vor allem die Scham verhüllt. Im Gegensatz zu Freytags Werk, wird die Bedeutung der Maske von anderen Autoren zwar aufgegriffen, jedoch in deutlich geringerem Umfang. Die elementarsten Erörterungen der bisherigen Forschung und die zentralen Aussagen von Freytag werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit zusammengefasst und sollen mit weiteren, eigenen Gedanken einen Überblick über die Bedeutung des Maskenmotivs in der Traumnovelle sowie in Eyes Wide Shut geben. In der heutigen Gesellschaft wird die Maske zunächst mit dem Karneval bzw. dem Fasching in Verbindung gebracht. Die Maske ist Teil der Verkleidung, mit der man den Winter vertreiben möchte. Die Wurzel der Maske liegt jedoch in ihrer rituellen Bedeutung zur Abschreckung böser Geister oder Anbetung von Gottheiten, vor allem in afrikanischen Kulturen. In Theatern, Musicals und Opern spielt die Maske nach wie vor eine große Rolle, um den Darstellern zu ermöglichen eine bestimmte Rolle zu verkör
