About the Book

In the Sydney heatwave of November 2019 a grisly scene of torture and murder is uncovered in a suburban street. Clint Ryal, journalist for the online newspaper the Sydney Saturday World is one of the first on the scene. He finds two naked people chanting religious verses and waiting, in front of a burning house, for a UFO to take them to New York. The remains of Tadeas Costa are found burning in the backyard, seemingly killed by his wife Emma and her lover Piripi Nosi. Clint's coverage of the case for the Sydney Saturday World gives him a reputation that is resented by his office rival George Bakker and his controlling manager Kelly Harper. Clint's last name, pronounced Real, has caused other people mirth throughout his life. During the following year while the accused await their trial, and through loss and heartache, Clint Ryal discovers who he really is and who his friends are. He investigates a religious cult, the Order of the Solar Temple. He unpicks the links between the Order and Tadeas Costa's murder. In the midst of a global pandemic, Clint finds himself on the trail of his absent father, Bekym Ryal. Clint loses the person who raised him and learns the history of his grandfather, Sunil Ryal. Sunil escaped from Iran when the Shah fell in 1979 and was only able to save his son Bekym; a fact that has haunted him throughout his life. Clint's mother, Pearl O'Leary, a product of her own dysfunctional upbringing, attempts to reconcile with her son after failing to be there for him when he was a child. Clint is rejected by his girlfriend and fired from his job with the newspaper. On a post-pandemic trip to America in January 2021, Clint meets and confronts his father. In New York, he falls in love with Lilla Adams, a detective with the NYPD and a woman so alluring that Clint is overwhelmed by his desire for her. Clint's oldest and best friend, Arash Esfandiari, forces Clint to abandon his pursuit of love with Detective Lilla Adams for reasons of national and international security. Clint turns his back on his old friend as well as his father. His friendship with Vishesh Devi is strengthened as other people in his life reject him or are left behind. Back in Sydney, Lubanzi Abara, attorney for Mr Nosi, intends to defend his client against the charge of murder on the basis of Piripi's cultural upbringing. This may result in Emma Costa being found guilty of the murder of Tadeas Costa while Piripi is not. Vanessa Raine and her lover Diana Darling Croswell are a formidable legal team for the defense of Emma Costa but have troubles of their own to contend with. Clint uses his skills as a journalist to help the lawyers uncover the truth about the murder of Emma Costa's husband while he yearns to be with Lilla.Becoming Real is the story of a murder linked to a religious cult. Religious beliefs, cultural heritages and politics co-exist and sometimes clash in the melting pots that are Australia, America and Iran. There is the shadow of ISIS, collaboration with the NYPD, the involvement of the Australian intelligence community and, amidst it all, a powerful love at first sight. Becoming Real is a classic murder mystery, but one that touches on the human condition. It is the first book in an explosive new crime series: The Becoming Chronicles.
