Im Einzelnen unterscheidet sich nicht nur die Nomenklatur zwischen den einzelnen Autoren, wenn etwa unter anderem von Kern- und Fundamentalkonzepten die Rede ist, sondern auch die Begriffsverständnisse und die an Basiskonzepte gerichteten Erwartungen und deren Funktionen. Die vorliegende Arbeit hat zum Ziel, die Hauptpunkte der Diskussion zusammenzufassen, unklare Punkte aufzuzeigen und die Idee der Basiskonzepte an sich kritisch zu hinterfragen. Dabei wurden die im Diskurs federführenden Autoren - in alphabetischer Reihenfolge - Detjen, Massing, Richter, Sander und Weißeno berücksichtigt. Im Einzelnen wird folgendermaßen vorgegangen. Zunächst ist mit der Klärung der Begriffsherkunft auch der Anlass der politikdidaktischen Diskussion deutlich zu machen, der mit kognitionspsychologischen Erkenntnissen und Evaluationsabsichten in der Lehr-Lern-Forschung zusammenhängt. Im Anschluss daran wird dargestellt, welchen Zweck die Basiskonzepte nach Ansicht verschiedener Autoren in der Politikdidaktik erfüllen sollen. Dabei ist insbesondere auch die Abgrenzung zu anderen, schon länger gebräuchlichen Begriffen wie 'Kategorie' und 'Kompetenz' zu erörtern. In Gliederungspunkt 3 wird die Basiskonzept-Vorstellung einer grundlegenden und allgemeinen Kritik unterzogen. Es wird argumentiert werden, dass der damit zu erzielende Mehrwert sehr gering ist. Gliederungspunkt 4 widmet sich der Rolle originär politischer Theorie bei der normativen Begründbarkeit und Definition von Basiskonzepten.
