About the Book

Learn to sew by making Common Sewing's six basic projects with obsessively clear instructions and access to private videos that can be pulled up on any device at any time. The author guides readers through setting up the essentials for their studio, work with a pdf pattern, and developing the skills needed to sew, one project at a time. "The Basics Beginner's Sewing Series" has successfully kick-started happy sewing careers and hobbies for thousands of adults and kids once baffled by their sewing machines. Become a maker in a day, a month, or a year!
Here are the six basics and skills you can learn:
Basic 1: Tea towel. Learn your way around your machine, sewing straight lines, making perfect hems. After this lesson, these skills can also help you make curtains or sew a hem onto your pants.
Basic 2: Zipper clutch. Learn how to put a zipper in, line a garment, pivot a corner, and identify a seam. After this lesson, these skills can also help you make some fun throw pillows.
Basic 3: Chef's apron. Learn about assembling an online pattern, how to place pockets, work with trims, cut on a fold and on the grain, and work with different sized hems and curved hems. After this lesson, these skills can also help you build any simple garment using a pattern.
Basic 4: Perfect Tee. Learn how to assemble a tailored garment through working with interfacing, setting sleeves, and hand stitching facings. Learn how to alter your clothes to fit your body. After this lesson, these skills can also help you tackle slightly more complicated patterns and sculpt your entire wardrobe.
Basic 5: Gigi knit tee. Learn about machine needles and how to work with and hem a knit. After this lesson, these skills can make any cheap t-shirt look like a million bucks.
Basic 6: PJ bottoms. Learn about basic pant construction, how to make a waistband, and how to tailor a hem to hit you just right. After this lesson, these skills can help you venture into pretty much any pattern and build something great.
The following resources are included in your purchase: the book, 6 pdf patterns that you can download and print from your home computer, written steps and video workshops to accompany each Basic, and admission to our private 'sewcial club' on Facebook. The true value of this commitment is the freedom to sew items that are beautiful, meaningful, and absolutely original. Let's explore your creativity. Let's sew!
