About the Author: Georges Darien (né Georges Hippolyte Adrien, le 6 avril 1862 - mort le 19 août 1921, à Paris) est un écrivain français de tendance anarchiste. Marquée par l'injustice et l'hypocrisie, son oeuvre, qui regroupe romans, pièces de théâtre, participations à des magazines littéraires, etc. se place sous le signe de la révolte et de l'écoeurement. Ayant perdu sa mère alors qu'il était en bas-âge, Darien fut élevé par une belle-mère catholique intransigeante, ce qui explique peut-être son anticléricalisme viscéral à venir. Le 16 mars 1881, devançant l'appel, il s'engage à l'armée, dans le deuxième escadron du Train. Le 23 mai 1883, son insoumission l'envoie pour 33 mois à Biribi, un bataillon disciplinaire en Tunisie. C'est le nom qu'il donnera à son roman, où il dénonce les difficultés de sa condition et celles de ses compagnons. Son roman est achevé en 1888 et publié deux ans plus tard par son éditeur Savine qui, craignant dans un premier temps un procès, ne le publiera qu'à la suite du succès de Sous-Offs de Lucien Descaves.
