About the Book

Barn Boss Leadership is a unique blend of fire, science, psychology and fire service history provided by a author who has worked for the largest of metropolitan to the smallest of volunteer departments. True leaders develop their power long before they receive a promotion. This text is designed to provide a guide and self-awareness gut check for individuals of all ranks. However, the emphasis of this text is for the informal leader in the organization, who is the catalyst for action. This text is for the individual who considers mastery the minimum standard. This is the second edition edited by Marla Patterson, former Books and Video Acquisition Manager for Fire Engineering/Pennwell. The first edition was developed with a zero dollar budget and self-published. After an overwhelming response and even adoption for promotional testing and officer development at multiple departments across the country Brian reinvested in this grassroots effort to further refine the Barn Boss Leadership text with the second edition.
About the Author: Brian serves as the Divisional Compliance System Owner for Fire Protection and Emergency Operations, Georgia Pacific - Plywood Division. He previously served as a Training Officer with Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services. He is Certified Georgia Smoke Diver #741. Brian has served as the International Society of Fire Service Instructors (ISFSI) Director At Large and as a member of the ISFSI Executive Board. He was instrumental in the delivery of the ISFSI 1403 Live Fire Credentialing Program as a Lead Instructor and Vice-Chair since its inception; a member of the Principles of Modern Fire Attack Instructor Cadre; Managing Editor for the Jones and Bartlett Training Officer's Desk Reference; and Program Manager for the ISFSI Training Officer's Credentialing Program, in partnership with Columbia Southern University. His honors include Fire Department Management from National Association of Counties; Gwinnett County Distinguished Service Award and Firefighter of the Year, Top 20 CTBS Instructor and National Seal of Excellence for Leadership and Safety from the National Fallen Fighters Foundation; several ISFSI Organizational Awards and the ISFSI Presidential Award in 2016. He has served as a member of the Honeywell First Responder Advisory Council, the AFG Criteria Development Committee, and Chairman of the Metro Atlanta Training Officers Association. Brian has authored over 35 nationally publicized articles and research papers, speaks across the country on leadership, training, and emergency response topics, and is a workshop instructor for FDIC. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Fire Safety and Technology Engineering from the University of Cincinnati and a Master's in Organizational Leadership from Columbia Southern University.
