Stöbert man zum Thema 'Dandy' in der Literatur, kommen einem die verschiedensten Begrifflichkeiten entgegen, die mehr oder weniger treffend den Dandy beschreiben sollen. Eine allgemein gültige Definition scheint es nicht zu geben und immer wieder dreht sich alles nur um fashion. Doch wer oder was ist ein Dandy? Diese Masterarbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Phänomen 'Dandy' im Allgemeinen sowie mit seiner Darstellung in der französischen Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft und nimmt anhand der Masculinity Studies Stellung zu dessen ambivalenter Männlichkeit im 19. Jahrhundert. Dafür ist es dienlich sich mit dem Typus des Dandys sowie mit dem Dandytum zu beschäftigen, was unweigerlich an George Beau Brummell vorbeiführt. Es stellt sich die Frage, wie ein "derart verabscheuungswürdiger Mensch zum Inbegriff des Dandytums werden [konnte], einer Ethik der Eleganz, des Adels, des guten Geschmacks und der Individualität?". Hiernach geht das zweite Kapitel genauer auf die Masculinity Studies ein, zeigt verschiedene Konzepte zur Männlichkeit auf und durchleuchtet die französische Literatur auf ihre verschiedenen Männlichkeitsinszenierungen vom Mittelalter bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts. Ebendieses Jahrhundert, das als Blütezeit des Dandyismus in die Kulturgeschichte eingehen soll. Darauffolgend werden drei verschiedene Dandys aus der französischen Literatur betrachtet. Beginnend mit Jules Amédée Barbey d'Aurevilly, der als erster Autor eine Art Theorie über das Dandytum verfasst hat, indem er über sein 'Idol' Beau Brummell traktiert. Im Anschluss folgt der zweite Theoretiker Charles Baudelaire mit seiner Abhandlung über den Dandy in seinem Werk Le Peintre de la vie moderne, ehe gegen Ende auf Honoré de Balzac a
