About the Book

English summary: The history of Italy from the 11th to 16th centuries is an important thematical source for French romanticism. In addition to the well-known authors and texts (e.g., Stendhal), this study also takes into account rarely-read examples (e.g., by Balzac and Quinet) and investigates both the literary and historiographical prerequisites of Italy's romantic image and its further development by Taine. The contrast between barbaric passions and artistic florescence central to many of these texts leads to the question of how this time period was converted into an era, the historiographical structure of which emerged in the first decades of the 19th century. Instead of looking at the emergence of the concept of the Renaissance as an era in isolation, the study also takes into account competing discourses, alternative and antithetical models of history, and analyzes the tension-filled interrelationship between the terms and concepts of "moyen age" and "renaissance."
