November 2008 wurde Barack Obama zum 44. Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika gewählt. Mit einem mehrheitlichen Ergebnis von 53 % der Wählerstimmen gewann der demokratische Senator aus Illinois gegen seinen republikanischen Mitstreiter John McCain. Während seiner Wahlkampagne, die mit der Verkündigung seiner Präsidentschaftskandidatur am 10. Februar 2007 begann, trat er in vielen, diversen Fernsehshows auf und führte zahlreiche Interviews. Im Rahmen einer der längsten Vorwahlen der Geschichte Amerikas setzte sich Barack Obama gegen seine demokratische Konkurrentin Hillary Clinton durch. Eine Siegesserie, die er in den kommenden Monaten mithilfe der größten Spendeneinnahme für eine Präsidentschaftswahl - in Zahlen $ 621,984,626 - stetig fortsetzte. Immer wieder wurde auch das Internet als Plattform für unzählige Kommentare und Videos dazu benutzt die Präsidentschaftskandidaten zu unterstützen oder schlichte eine Meinungsäußerung über selbige öffentlich kund zu tun. Ein Beispiel für einen Internetblogs dazu ist www.barackobama.com. Wohingegen Videos auf der populären Website www.youtube.de eingesehen werden können. Analysiert man diese im Hinblick auf das Auftreten des damaligen Präsidentschaftskandidaten, fällt seine charismatische und offene Art besonders auf. Wie kommt es, dass der Zuschauer beim Betrachten einer solchen Aufnahme sofort einen sympathischen Eindruck von Barack Obama hat? Eine Lösung dazu kann vielleicht Geoffrey Leech geben. Der englische Linguist beschäftigt sich schon seit den 80er Jahren mit der Höflichkeitsforschung. Auf ihn gehen das Politeness-Principle und die Politeness Maxime zurück.
