Au tablier de serge, tout maculé de gouttes de colle forte qu'il portait devant lui, on pouvait deviner un ouvrier travaillant chez un des nombreux fabricants gainiers qui, à l'époque en question, habitaient sur ce quai. Il était onze heures du matin, ce moment à peu près généralement consacré, dans tous les corps d'état, au déjeuner des ouvriers. Le nôtre avait tenu à faire ce repas en plein air, et, carrément assis, jambes pendantes, le couteau en main, il rognait petit à petit un énorme croûton couronné d'une forte tranche de lard maintenue sous le pouce. On dit que, pour bien faire, il ne faut jamais s'occuper de deux choses à la fois. Le mangeur paraissait imbu de ce principe, car il semblait uniquement absorbé par la tâche de faire disparaître au plus vite pain et lard. Pourtant un observateur qui l'aurait surveillé se serait étonné de certain regard en dessous, prompt comme l'éclair, qu'il lançait vers un individu stationnant à cent mètres plus loin sur le quai. À la vérité, tout passant aurait pu, comme notre ouvrier, être fort intrigué par l'attitude de ce nouveau personnage. - Coiffé d'une mauvaise casquette et vêtu d'un bourgeron et d'une cotte blanchis de plâtre, ce maçon, car son costume indiquait cet état, se tenait immobile à l'angle du Pont-au-Change et ne quittait pas des yeux la voûte écrasée qui sert d'entrée à la Conciergerie. Il était bien évident qu'il guettait au passage quelqu'un qui devait sortir d'un instant à l'autre. Tout à coup, un homme s'élança de dessous cette voûte. Semblable à l'oiseau de nuit qui se trouve tout à coup exposé au grand jour, il parut ébloui par le brillant soleil qui éclairait le quai. Un instant sa poitrine sembla se gonfler pour absorber un air pur dont elle avait dû être longtemps privée. À coup sûr, c'était un prisonnier qu'on venait de faire libre. Après cette première et involontaire émotion de la liberté reconquise, le nouveau venu promena autour de lui un regard qui s'arrêta subitement sur le maçon. Mais celui-ci, avant d'être aperçu, avait quitté son poste d'observation, et la casquette à la main, comme si la chaleur le fatiguait, il suivait le trottoir à pas lents, sans avoir le moins du monde l'air de connaître celui qu'il avait si longtemps guetté et devant lequel il passa sans le regarder. Sans tourner la tête, l'ouvrier gainier, qui déjeunait plus bas, avait, du coin de l'oeil, vu du même coup l'homme sortir de la Conciergerie et le maçon se mettre en marche, sa casquette à la main. C'était sans doute un signal attendu, car il sourit et murmura: ...
