Paul Halter est né à Haguenau en 1956. Digne héritier des auteurs anglais du siècle dernier, il a publié au Masque une quarantaine de romans policiers, baignant souvent dans une atmosphère fantastique et faisant une large part aux mystères en chambre close . Il a remporté en 1987, avec La Quatrième porte, le Prix du Festival de Cognac, et en 1988, avec Le Brouillard Rouge, le Grand Prix du roman d'aventures. Le Masque de l'année lui sera attribué pour Les Larmes de Sibyl en 2005. L'intérêt suscité par son oeuvre a traversé les frontières et nombre de ses romans ont été traduits dans plusieurs pays, notamment en Italie, au Japon, en Chine et aux USA. Au Japon, à quatre reprises, il a remporté la première place de l' Authentic Mystery Best 10 de Hara Shobo, avec La Quatrième porte (2003), La Mort vous invite (2004), Le Brouillard rouge (2005) et La Chambre du fou (2008).
