Maniobras hábiles y prontas desbarataron en una hora a los vencedores de catorce años, y a un enemigo perfectamente constituido y hábilmente mandado. Ayacucho es la desesperación de nuestros enemigos. Ayacucho, semejante a Waterloo, que decidio el destino de la Europa, ha fijado la suerte de las naciones americanas. Las generaciones venideras esperan la victoria de Ayacucho para bendecirla y contemplarla sentada en el trono de la Libertad, dictando a los americanos el ejercicio de sus derechos y el sagrado imperio de la naturaleza.

... El General Sucre es el Padre de Ayacucho, es el redentor de los hijos del Sol, es el que ha roto las cadenas con que envolvió Pizarro el imperio de los Incas. La posteridad representará a Sucre con un pie en el Pichíncha y el otro en el Potosí, llevando en sus manos la cuna de Manco Capac y contemplando las cadenas del Perú rotas por su espada ".

Muchas gracias a su felicitación por mi ascenso a General en Jefe de Colombia: realmente no esperaba este grado que en nuestro país es tan difícil y aunque la Batalla de Ayacucho que ha dado libertad al Perú y paz a la América, tiene un mérito extraordinario, dudé que se le diese exactamente en Bogotá. Estoy muy agradecido al Congreso por el presente de la espada que me ha regalado; y pienso retribuírsela con otro presente de un gran mérito que es el manto de la última reina de los incas que los españoles por ningún tesoro pudieron conseguir y que me lo han regalado sus descendientes; añadiré a esto para el congreso, una corona de oro que me ha regalado esta ciudad, cuyo valor físico aunque no es de importancia tiene sí el infinito valor moral de ser el presente de un pueblo patriota a un General colombiano que ha conducido en triunfo las armas de su patria a dos mil leguas. Al Libertador le regalé la bandera con que Pizarro entró al Cuzco, y le he mandado al vicepresidente seis banderas de los regimientos españoles vencidos en Ayacucho y los cuatro estandartes, etc., etc., de las cuatro provincias del alto Perú, con los sellos reales etc., etc. Pasado mañana salgo para la Paz a encontrar al Libertador que viene a visitar estas provincias y arreglar lo que falta ".

"... El Libertador puso en mis manos una guirnalda de oro que le presentó la ciudad del Cuzco el día que llegó allí, y que recibió a nombre del ejército: a nombre del ejército la he mandado al Congreso de Colombia: ella está guarnecida de brillantes y perlas, pero, su valor físico, es bien poco, mas su valor moral sí es bien estimable.
La ciudad de Cochabamba me presentó una guirnalda de oro cuando estuve allí, y el colegio una pluma de oro, ambas cosas las he mandado a la municipalidad de Cumaná. Al museo de Bogotá he enviado el manto o acsu de la reina mujer de Atahualpa, que es un bello monumento de antigüedad, y una porción de piedras minerales.

Mi parte del Alto Perú la he cedido para las viudas e hijos de los soldados colombianos, muertos en Ayacucho; pues en el Bajo Perú me han dado bastante para vivir " .
