Se lo puso un poeta revestido de armadura. Puerto de siete mares, figura desde el siglo XVI en antiguas cartas de navegación, señalado por una rosa de los vientos. Muchas generaciones de tripulantes aventureros lo han entonado en canciones marineras y su nombre ha sido invocado en lenguas extranjeras como la visión de la arribada a la bahía feliz... (...) Durante casi cuatro siglos, antes de la apertura del Canal de Panamá, era la estación obligada de los más osados surcadores del océano. Después se agregó a su imagen el signo de la nostalgia y se convirtió en tema de poetas, novelistas, pintores, músicos, cineastas. Un holandés volador, Joris Ivens, proyectó al celuloide sus cerros, el mensaje de los vientos y de la humanidad diaria. El doctor Francia le dedicó su amor. Este Valparaíso que Neruda interpela como un enamorado y se permite la familiaridad de decirle ¡qué loco eres!, continúa siendo el atalaya que desde lo alto indica a los barcos perdidos su camino y los deriva a buen puerto. Hace un siglo, el joven Rubén Darío estuvo trabajando formalmente como aduanero en Valparaíso. Pero en verdad, por debajo y encima de los papeles de recepción o despacho de mercaderías, preparaba las alas para el prodigioso vuelo de Azul... (...) La exaltación de la marisquería sensual, por ejemplo. Si Neruda escribió su Oda al Caldillo de Congrio, se rememora y celebra aquí el corazón de la cholga, porque en medio del sufrimiento está también la necesidad de seguir viviendo, defendiendo y rescatando un puerto que siempre será para los suyos golpe de espuma, olor a sal, bramido del viento sur golpeando las caras a la hora de las tempestades frenéticas y de los momentos más personales. Carlos Johnson traza una fotografía externa e íntima, subjetiva del puerto de los mil ángulos. Penetra por los recovecos del corazón marino y urbano. Estampa el testimonio del sentimiento que hace del porteño un amante incondicional de su ciudad, de la difícil vida popular y de sus públicos encantos.
