This year is about transitions for you. In your career up until this point, you were told what to wear, when to eat, and even what to think in many cases. You became the perfect soldier and a hero. During the tough times, you fantasized about what life would be like when you got back home to your family. Some days may leave you feeling rudderless. Your built-in group of friends that you have developed in the service will always be there for you, but your life is now moving on a different trajectory. Rather than ignoring this fact, it is critical that you embrace the journey. This journal has been created for you. Your military teams have plenty of checklists and guides for leading up to your discharge, to point you on the correct path for setting up housing, insurance, and the hundreds of other activities necessary to move forward. This planner is more of a place to chronicle this journey. In a few years, when you look back at your thoughts and activities that are happening during the first year in civilian life, you will see how far you have come and how much you have changed internally to become independent and bold in your new life.There is only two set rules with this workbook. Once per month, reflect on what you want to accomplish and every day, chronicle it on the planning pages. By doing so, you will be building structure into your life that served you well over the past few years.The prompts include: Things I want to improve this month. This can be anything - both physical or emotional. Maybe you want to improve your relationship with your family, or maybe it is something as simple as a 'honey do' project from your spouse. Whatever it is, you put it here. There are only five spaces, so make them count. Ways that I can improve them: This is the how-to vs. the what. There are 10 spaces here. Think big picture rather than tiny tasks. After all, you only have 10 spaces here.Challenges I might face and how I plan to overcome them: Think of this as a safe space to write down your fears and concerns and how you will mitigate them. Once again, it could be physical, emotional, or spiritual. Look at your whole self, not just your physical strength. Also, be sure to think about how you can enlist others to help.Progress/Setbacks: This is a tiny area, to list your big accomplishments or small setbacks so that you can put it all into perspective. After all, we are just talking about one month.On the daily pages, you will have areas to tap into both sides of your brain. You start with the Doodles section. Draw pictures. Use it for anything but words. Don't worry. You aren't going to be selling these. This just helps your left and right side of your brain connect.The rest of the page focuses on a task list of sorts. Things I will work on today and Steps that I will take. Do yourself a favor when filling this out. Don't just think of the physical items that you need to cross off your list. Think of ways to work in self-care and introspection. Maybe it is 15 minutes of walking through a park alone, or taking a run before everyone else is up. What gets measured gets managed, and if you put self-care into your regimen, you will be much happier. The last section is a daily review. You can do this first thing the next morning if you want, but be sure to fill it out and chronicle your achievements and setbacks so that you can learn as you go along. By the end of the year, this book should look dog-eared and completely wrecked. Pages may even be falling out. That is ok. This external process of writing things down helps the internal process of discovering who you are becoming in your new role of civilian. Now, enjoy the journey
