About the Book

The Rev. David Banting has written: "And in every generation the Church needs to be renewed by the Spirit of God and reformed by the Word of God -- ecclesia semper reformanda." (David Banting in Why I Am An Anglican, Simon Vibert, ed. Orthos Booklet 23) It is for the renewal and reformation of the Church in our generation that these sermons were first delivered and are now being published. It is not enough for us to rejoice in our glorious heritage. We must also confront the issues of our own time and proclaim the Gospel today. It is my hope that my effort will encourage others to share with us in proclaiming the "knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." (II Cor. 4:6) This collection of sermons, God-willing, will enable you to do just that.
About the Author: Rev. Hugh Hall is a native of Alabama. (b. 1928) He was graduated from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, and from Union Theological Seminary, NYC. Both the B.S. degree from North-western and the STM from Union were with highest honors. Rev. Hall was confirmed in The Episcopal Church in 1958. He was ordained deacon in 1960 and priest in 1961 in the Diocese of Washington, D.C. As rector of Christ Church in Chaptico, Maryland, he was part of the renewal of The Episcopal Church in Southern Maryland. This renewal doubled the number of clergy and increased the financial strength of every parish in Southern Maryland. In 1987 he left The Episcopal Church USA to be part of the traditionalist Anglican movement that was developing in this country. He established and was rector of St. John's United Episcopal Church in Charlotte Hall, Maryland. In 1992, Rev. Hall accepted the call of All Saints Parish in Pensacola, Florida. All Saints is a parish in the Convocation of Anglicans in North America. (CANA) As part of the traditionalist movement within Anglicanism, Rev. Hall has been a leader in the return to the basic doctrines and values of Anglicanism since the Reformation. "Many people today are learning that in returning to the faith of the Church -- centering in the Lordship of Jesus Christ -- they are discovering a renewal of the power of the faith." Among the major influences of Rev. Hall's life and ministry have been Reinhold Niebuhr, Archbishop William Temple, C.S. Lewis, and most recently John Stott, whose book Basic Christianity is considered by many a Christian classic. Rev. Hall is married to the former Suzanne Henderson. He is the father of four children and the grandfather of seven. At present he is the Associate Minister for Education at All Saints Church.
