Azul... es un libro de cuentos y poemas del poeta nicaragüense Rubén Darío, considerado una de las obras más relevantes del modernismo hispánico. Se publicó por primera vez en Valparaíso el 30 de julio de 1888. Dos años después, en Guatemala, apareció una segunda edición, corregida y aumentada.Los poemas y cuentos que componen el libro fueron en su mayor parte escritos por Rubén Darío durante su estancia en Chile, país en el que permaneció entre 1886 y 1889. Todos los textos habían aparecido previamente en la prensa chilena, entre el 7 de diciembre de 1886, fecha en la que apareció "El pájaro azul", y el 23 de junio de 1888 ("Palomas blancas").En el modernismo el color azul y el cisne blanco eran el símbolo del movimiento. En su primera edición, la obra llevaba un prólogo de su amigo chileno Eduardo de la Barra con un epígrafe de Víctor Hugo, poeta muy admirado por Darío, que dice así "L'art c'est l'azur". En una nota a la segunda edición del libro, de 1890, el autor explica que esta cita del poeta francés motivó el título. Sin embargo, años después, en Historia de mis libros (1913), negó esta relación. Según explica en esta obra, el azul era para él "el color del ensueño, el color del arte, un color helénico y homérico, color oceánico y firmamental".En su primera edición de 1888 y en este libro electrónico, el libro estaba dividido en las siguientes partes: "Cuentos en prosa", que incluía los relatos "El Rey Burgués", "La Ninfa", "El fardo", "El velo de la reina Mab", "La canción del oro", "El rubí", "El palacio del sol", "El pájaro azul" y "Palomas blancas y garzas morenas". "En Chile", con dos textos en prosa: "Álbum porteño" y "Álbum santiagués". "El año lírico", con cuatro poemas dedicados a las cuatro estaciones: "Primaveral", "Estival", "Autumnal" e "Invernal". Dos poemas sueltos: "Pensamiento de otoño" y "Anagke".En los relatos, Darío inserta con frecuencia temas y motivos de la mitología griega, pero también de los cuentos de hadas. Aparecen personajes como Mab, la reina de las hadas, o Puck, el duende de El sueño de una noche de verano de William Shakespeare. A pesar de que predomina este ambiente de ensueño, destaca por su estética próxima al naturalismo el relato "El fardo", que relata la muerte de un joven trabajador portuario. La denuncia de la injusticia social no es ajena a estos cuentos: está presente también en el relato "La canción del oro", en el que un pobre poeta bohemio entona un amargo himno al oro (que vale aquí como metonimia del dinero).Uno de los ejes temáticos de los relatos incluidos en Azul... es la reflexión, muchas veces amarga, sobre la condición del artista en la sociedad burguesa. El mejor ejemplo es "El Rey Burgués", irónicamente subtitulado "Cuento alegre", en el cual el poeta protagonista es condenado por el rey que da título al cuento a accionar sin descanso el manubrio de una caja de música. Los críticos han comentado que en gran medida esto refleja la desubicación personal del propio autor entre la plutocracia chilena.
