La cualidad engrandece el conjunto de poemas demasiado tiempo silenciados, creación poética a la que esperamos que José Rico dé continuidad.
José Rico no engaña; el libro no es un poemario, no es un trabajo en torno a una temática cerrada, es un compendio de su poesía selecta, que nos ofrece respetando la cronología de su gestación, movido por el deseo de conservar para sí y para quien quiera leerla su trayectoria poética y vital. Ambas, sí, porque la suya es una poesía auténtica en el sentido literal. El autor escribe lo que le mueve y le conmueve; su poesía está despojada de adorno y elucubración o efectismo intelectual. Escribe sobre la vida, no es conceptual. Ello dice mucho de su carácter.
Como nos informa el prólogo, José Rico (Oviedo 1956) inicia sus balbuceos poéticos en su juventud y escribe asiduamente aunque abandona bruscamente el hábito para reemprenderlo años después. El compendio lo refleja: de 1974 a 1980 atestigua constancia creativa, que se interrumpe repentinamente hasta que, en 2009, Rico vuelve a la pluma y parece decidido a no dejarla. En cualquier caso, el libro acoge sus poemas hasta 2016.
Estas características permiten concluir que la calidad poética está inexorablemente sujeta a la evolución sensible al paso de años. El lector asiste al proceso de maduración poética del autor, lo cual otorga al conjunto la doble dimensión de objeto pedagógico (como material de trabajo para escuelas de escritura poética, por ejemplo) o como placentera lectura, sobre todo a partir de 1977.
El grueso de la producción de José Rico atestigua su veneración por la Escuela de Barcelona; bebe de su doble inquietud sensible: el dolor ajeno en lo social de los primeros tiempos de este grupo poético y el propio en lo personal, ambos inscritos en la misma vena de lo sensible. En lo temático Rico se mueve entre la crítica social y la inquietud amorosa, casi siempre amor perdido, añorado. Su inscripción ideológica se manifiesta en la elección de sus modelos, tanto de la Escuela de Barcelona como otros anteriores (Alberti, Lorca, Miguel Hernández...), cuyos ecos resuenan en los poemas de los primeros años: "[...] / ¿Adónde vais / hijos de España? / Al fuego, / madre, / al fuego. // [...] // Un soldadito español / se fue a la tierra del fuego, / mi madre me pondrá flores / cuando me quede en el suelo. / Al suelo, / madre, / al suelo." (1976, Quo vadis).
Rebelde e inconformista, la voz poética no se somete a la inercia de la sociedad que le rodea: 'No está en tus manos', dicen / para que no luches, / pero tus manos se ensucian / cuando callas, cuando no parpadeas de asombro, [...] // Dicen que no está en tus manos; / úsalas para pararles. // [...] (2014, Dicen que no está en tus manos)
La pasión amorosa se revive casi siempre desde el pasado, en forma de acerbo desamor:
Formalmente el compendio, como podemos esperar de una recopilación que se presenta con la intención de testimoniar la evolución de José Rico como poeta y arranca en la juventud del autor, manifiesta, sobre todo en los poemas de los primeros años, probaturas de acercamiento a modelos clásicos, algún coqueteo con la rima o escarceos con la poesía vanguardista del momento. Pero es el verso libre el que predomina en los poemas
