Es bestehen immer noch Unklarheiten bezüglich der Ätiologie, der kognitiven Fähigkeiten, der Zuordnung zur Behindertenrichtung sowie sinnvoller Interventionsmaßnahmen. Gemäß des historischen Hintergrundes unterscheidet man zwischen dem Kanner - Autismus (auch `low - functioning - autism´) und dem Asperger - Autismus (auch `high - functioning - autism). Wing (1981) stellte eine Triade auf, nach der sie die autistische Störung durch drei Symptome definiert: 1. "ernstes Defizit beim sozialen Zusammensein; 2.Defizit in verbaler und nonverbaler Kommunikation 3. Defizit in flexiblen, phantasiegeleiteten Aktivitäten, statt dessen ein Verhaltensmuster, das von Wiederholungen und Stereotypien dominiert wird." Kanner: Frühkindlicher Autismus Der frühkindliche Autismus nach Kanner definiert sich als eine schwere Entwicklungsstörung im emotionalen und motorischen Bereich sowie Kontakt- und Wahrnehmungsstörungen. Im DSM - IV (Diagnostisches und Statistisches Manual Psychischer Störungen) werden folgende Kardinalsymptome bzw. Primärsymptome für frühkindlichen Autismus nach Kanner aufgeführt: 1. qualitative Abweichung in der sozialen Interaktion (eingeschränkter Gebrauch von Mimik, Gestik, Körperhaltung als Instrument sozialer Interaktion; Unfähigkeit der Beziehung zu Gleichaltrigen; Mangel an Empathie; Mangel am sozio - emotionaler Gegenseitigkeit) 2. qualitative Abweichung im Kommunikationsmuster (verzögertes oder Ausbleiben der Sprache; Sprache ist idiosynkratisch, stereotyp oder repetitiv; Fehlen von Imitations- und Rollenspiel) 3. begrenzte, stereotypes und sich wiederholendes Repertoire von Interessen und Aktivitäten (starre
