About the Book

The holidays are a fun but stressful time of year for all. Add autism to the equation and there is potential for a nightmare to occur if there is not a game plan in place. Travis shares his game plan and provides tips to parents wanting to learn how to help their children survive the holiday gathering without a severe meltdown. Travis talks about using the special interest as a coping mechanism. The special interest can help your child be entertained and keep their mind off of the stress that is being placed upon them by the amount of people at a holiday gathering. This book will teach you how to use the special interest to your advantage and help your child with meltdowns. While not all melt-downs can be prevented there is an excellent chance that they can be reduced with proper interventions. Travis also teaches the reader how to come down into the mind of a child with autism and really connect with them in their environment and their world. It is important that you understand that it is easier for you to come into their world than it is for them to come into your world because their brain does not work like yours. Travis provides ten tips for making your holiday season safe and happy for everyone. 1 Where am I going? 2 How long am I staying there? 3 Who am I going with? 4 Who else is going to be there? 5 What triggers my child's meltdowns? 6 What possible triggers could happen at the holiday gathering? 7 What tools do I have to help ease a melt-down? 8 How do I intervene? 9 What toys or special interest do I have to help calm the melt-down? 10 What's the daily schedule for the trip? Read this book to find out how answering these 10 questions before you leave for your holiday gathering or vacation will help you have a successful trip and gathering. Here is an excerpt from the book. "Also keep in mind that melt-downs happen because a child's basic human needs are not being met. If the child needs personal space and someone is stepping on their toes it is going to have a melt-down because the child is in pain and needs the other person to get off of his or her feet. In some cases the person with autism may not be able to communicate that he or she is in pain and the person who is stepping on their feet may not even know that they are doing so. This is a problem and one that we must learn to help our children with autism communicate their most basic human needs on. People with autism need to have their basic human needs met just as much as anyone else in the world. We can help a child with autism get their basic human needs met if we learn how to communicate with them in their world. It is all about coming into your child's mind and their world. You want to understand the way they think and you also want to know how they use a make-believe world to help them cope with autism. I know many adults with autism who even as adults use the make-believe world to help them cope with their autism."
