Anschließend wird die Frage beantwortet, wie die zukünftige Führungskräfteentwicklung, vor dem Hintergrund der veränderten Mitarbeiterpräferenzen der neueren Generationen aussehen sollte. In den vergangenen Jahrzehnten wurden viele theoretische Ansätze und Sichtweisen zur Personalführung entwickelt und veröffentlicht. Sie beruhen meist auf empirischen Erhebungen, Theorien oder Erfahrungen aus der Praxis. Betrachtet man diese, stellt man fest, dass der Trend hin zu flacheren Hierarchien und somit zu mehr Selbstorganisation der Mitarbeiter geht. Glaubt man den Forschern, unterliegt Deutschland seit mehreren Jahrzehnten einem Wertewandel, der auch entscheidend für die Arbeits- und Führungswelt in den Unternehmen ist. Eine der wichtigsten Folgen ist das Streben nach mehr Selbstverwirklichung und Selbstentfaltung. Ein jedes Individuum hat das Bedürfnis, seine Stärken und auch Schwächen zu verstehen, seine Talente zu entfalten wie auch in die Gesellschaft einzubringen. Dieser Wertewandel ist geprägt durch die Einstellungen der Generationen Y und Z, bezogen auf Lebens- und Arbeitsentwürfe, veränderte Präferenzen in Bezug auf Arbeit sowie das fordern nach mehr Mitbestimmung in den Unternehmen. Im Zentrum des Interesses von Unternehmen stehen immer mehr die Belange der kommenden Generationen, denn diese stellen die Führungskräfte vor neue Herausforderungen.
