Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Am 11. September 2001 brachten global operierende, religiös motivierte Terroristen das World Trade Center (WTC) und das Verteidigungsministerium (Pentagon) zum Einsturz und töteten Tausende Menschen. Das vierte der in den Anschlag involvierten Flugzeuge stürzte bei Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania ab und sollte offenbar den Präsidentensitz Camp Davis treffen. In New York starben 2801 Menschen, in Washington 184 und in Pennsylvania 40, die insgesamt neunzehn Terroristen nicht mit eingerechnet. Das Ereignis gilt traurigerweise als bisher „perfektester" Terrorakt der Geschichte. Niemals zuvor konnten Millionen Menschen ´live` im Fernsehen miterleben, wie ein Kontinent, ein Land, eine Stadt, ein Way of Life angegriffen wurde und Tausende Menschen vor den erstarrten Augen der vereinten Fernsehwelt jämmerlich in den Tod getrieben wurden. Diese globale Wahrnehmung in einer von Medien bestimmten Weltgesellschaft lässt uns die Attentate als unvergesslichen und zutiefst verinnerlichten Film in Erinnerung behalten (und nicht nur lediglich als ein Datum in der Geschichte etwa so wie Pearl Harbor). Viele fühlten sich an das Schreckensszenario von Pearl Harbor zurückerinnert oder auch an den, durch ein Attentat auf den österreichischen Thronfolger Franz Ferdinand ausgelösten, Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkrieges am 28. Juni 1914 in Sarajevo. Diese beispiellose Terrorwelle forderte nicht „nur" zahlreiche Menschenleben und berühmte, kulturell einzigartige Gebäude, sondern erschütterte das Sicherheitsgefühl der Welt. Sie rief eine globale, neue, bis Dato in unseren Breitengraden des westlichen Kulturkreises nie gekannte Angst vor Terrorismus hervor, gefährdete die Stabilität der Weltwirtschaft, stellte politische Strategien in Frage und machte deutlich auf den fundamentalistischen Islam aufmerksam.
