Examensarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Didaktik - Mathematik, Note: 1,0, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Wie in vielen anderen europäischen Ländern ist der Mathematikunterricht in Deutschland so aufgebaut, dass Algebra erst nach langjähriger Ausbildung der arithmetischen Fähigkeiten in Jahrgangsstufe sieben, beziehungsweise aufgrund der Verkürzung der gymnasialen Schulzeit auf acht Jahre am Gymnasium, in Klasse sechs eingeführt wird. Diese Tatsache begründet sich unter anderem dadurch, dass sich aus historischer Sicht die Algebra aus der Arithmetik heraus entwickelt hat und das Kind, in Anlehnung an die Stufentheorie des Entwicklungspsychologen Jean Piaget, erst mit einem Alter von 12 Jahren in das Stadium der formalen Operation übergeht, in der es die Fähigkeit erwirbt, algebraisch zu denken (vgl. GERHARD 2008, 113). Seit mehreren Jahren, nicht zuletzt durch die Ergebnisse internationaler Vergleichstests wie PISA, wird in Fachkreisen unter dem Begriff "Early Algebra" diskutiert, ob die Einführung erster Ansätze von Algebra in der Grundschule für die Ausbildung der algebraischen Fähigkeiten in der Sekundarstufe förderlich sein könnte (vgl. HRZÁN; SEFIEN 2009, 16ff.). Hintergrund ist die Tatsache, dass Schülerinnen und Schüler bei der späten Einführung der Algebra in der Sekundarstufe, deutliche Probleme mit dieser Disziplin haben. LINCHEVSKI und HERSCOVICS (1996) beschreiben den Übergang der Arithmetik zur Algebra als "cognitive gap" (vgl. SPECHT 2009, 20ff.). Während sich die Arithmetik den Schülern auf natürliche Weise erschließt, muss sich die Algebra erst zum konkreten Unterrichtsgegenstand etablieren, um von den Schülern verstanden zu werden. Dieses "cognitive gap" widerspricht aber nicht grundsätzlich einer früheren Einführung der Algebra, wie es nach der Stufentheorie von PIAGET der Fall ist. GERHARD (2008) stellt in diesem Zusammenhang die These auf, dass der Erwerb von algebraischen Kenntnissen
