Dabei wird insbesondere auf die wirtschaftlichen, religiösen und monarchischen Konstellationen und Reibungen zwischen den Puritanern und der Krone sowie mit andersgläubigen Bürgern eingegangen. 'The Pilgrim Fathers' - der Pilger wird im Duden als jemand beschrieben, der aus Frömmigkeit eine längere Reise zu einer besonders verehrten Stätte macht. Eine Definition des Vaters aus demselben Nachschlagewerk lautet: "Mann, der als Beschützer, Helfer, Sorgender für andere da ist, eintritt". Der geschichtliche Laie sollte dennoch nicht vorschnell darauf schließen, dass es sich etwa um heilige Schutzpatrone oder gar um einen altertümlichen Beruf handelt, zu dessen Aufgabe die Betreuung frommer Wanderer gehörte. Konsultiert man den Duden mit dem gesamten Wort, werden die Pilgerväter als "die ersten puritanischen Siedler Neuenglands" beschrieben. Zwar umschreibt diese Definition Personenkreis, Ort und Tätigkeit der Bezeichnung, aber vielmehr die beiden Einzelbegriffe liefern erste Indizien für Intention und Motiv der Reise sowie die gesellschaftliche Stellung der Reisenden. Mit Unterzeichnung des Pariser Friedens 1783, benötigte die nun unabhängige amerikanische Nation ein geschichtliches Fundament als Ausgangspunkt für das Narrativ eines glorreichen Landes. Zwar war schon 1607 mit Jamestown erstmals erfolgreich eine permanente Siedlung geboren worden, allerdings fiel der Vaterschaftstest dieser ausschließlich männlichen Siedler die zudem permanent mit den eingeborenen Powhatan im Konflikt lagen, nur ungenügend aus.
