About the Book

English summary: Nathan Soderblom is generally known for his scholarly achievements as a historian of religion and as an ecumenical churchman. The present volume presents him as a theologian of equally high caliber. His view of the life and work of Jesus Christ was the center of his concept of theology. The first text, an early essay, deals with the relation between Jesus expectation of an imminent doomsday and his high esteem of natural human life. The major part of the volume is dedicated to the Story of Christ's Passion. Several threads are artfully interwoven in it. Basically a devotional book retelling the Biblical recital, it is founded on modern critical exegesis and thorough theological reflection. It takes on the form of a medieval mystery play, but in such a way as to include the viewers as participants. References to the passion storys background in the history of religions and samples of its later interpretation in theology, literature, and the fine arts, most specifically in J. S. Bachs music, are included at every stage. The overriding idea is that in the passion of Christ, the religions of sacrifice are being overcome by God taking suffering upon himself for the sake of reconciliation with humans.
About the Author: Dr. theol. Dietz Lange is Professor emer. for Systematic Theology at the University of Gottingen.
