En esta nueva obra el autor retorna a los relatos. Abandona la Ciencia Ficción, mayoritariamente presente en "El Centinela de las Tres Lunas", para en esta ocasión, a través de la intriga, el misterio y algunos toques de horror, presentarnos cuatro relatos que tienen en común el trastorno mental, la violencia y la paranoia que, sin embargo, conviven en todas las sociedades y están presentes en la cotidianidad de la vida, a veces de manera subterránea, pero muchas otras de manera explícita, clara y visible.

Es también la búsqueda de Dios, que se representa de varias formas: como creador y soberano, como logos imperecedero y racional o amalgama y concentración de todas las pulsiones y anhelos, otro de los grandes temas. Por ello la realidad, hermana bastarda de lo divino, es quizás el tema principal de la obra, y como esta varía con cada mirada, obra, pensamiento u omisión.

En "Los Pasajeros y su Sombra", dos personajes muy dispares juntan sus caminos por un tiempo a través del desierto por una carretera que parece tener la cualidad de no poder cambiar. Durante el trayecto cada uno irá abriéndose al otro, mostrando esos parajes ocultos que suelen depositarse en los abismos.

"Instrumentum Dei" narra la historia de un adolescente, Diego Novoa, y su relación con un jesuita, el padre Vidal, el cual ve en el joven un futuro aspirante a la ordenación sacerdotal. Ambientada en la posguerra española y con un claro tono realista pero no exento de reflexión, "Instrumentum Dei " nos muestra cómo nuestras mayores aspiraciones suelen acabar en las más grandes de nuestras desdichas.

"Mil Ojos Tienen las Tinieblas" es sin duda el relato que más debe al género de Terror y en el que más referencias cinematográficas se puede encontrar. Narra la historia de Ricardo, un periodista de tendencias antisociales, casi misantrópicas, que nunca cree lo que publica. Más allá de su trama, con claras reminiscencias de los clásicos del género, la obra explora el concepto de realidad, preguntándose si algo acaba siendo real por el hecho de que muchos lo crean, de que manera las instituciones y los medios juegan con esta temible posibilidad y, sobre todo, cómo es el vacío existencial de las sociedades posmodernas el que permite este maquiavélico juego de dados.

"Simón del Desierto" es quizás el relato más amable, pero no por ello menos inquietante. En la línea del anterior, aborda de que forma el arte y el pensamiento se convierten en moneda para el mercado. Supone una reflexión sobre la creación literaria, sus límites, sus recompensas y sus consecuencias, señala la delgada línea entre la enfermedad mental y la inspiración creativa, y nos hace reflexionar sobre la clásica idea de la vida como carga insoportable, a modo de condena, y la creación y el conocimiento como una de las pocas respuestas posibles a esta temible certeza, pese a que estas suelen acabar, tarde o temprano, en el fondo de esos abismos ya conocidos, allá donde la promesa de Dios termina ofreciéndonos lo único que conocemos de él, su ausencia.
