Jedoch steckt in Mode ein viel größeres Phänomen. Mode in seiner sozialen Funktion ist der Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit. Ziel dieser wissenschaftlichen Arbeit ist es, die Mode aus soziologischer Sicht zu betrachten und dessen Auswirkung auf die einzelnen Individuen und der Gesellschaft. Dabei wird der Zusammenhang der Rollenverteilung der verschiedenen Geschlechter hergestellt und die Stellung der Frau wird mit hoher Aufmerksamkeit beleuchtet. Dabei wird unter anderem der Frage auf den Grund gegangen, ob die Mode als Repräsentationsmittel in der heutigen Rollenverteilung noch eine Rolle spielt. Denn schaut man sich den sozialen Status und die Identität der Frau im Blickwinkel der Mode und dessen soziale Funktion an, kommt die Frage der Rollenverteilung auf. Wird Mode überhaupt als Repräsentationsmittel gesellschaftlich genutzt? Um ein Verständnis für das Thema aufbringen zu können, muss der soziale Status und die Identität der Frau um 1900 in Europa näher betrachtet werden. Kontext mit der Kleidung wird hergestellt, indem wir die soziale Funktion der Kleidung genauer studieren. Haben wir die Grundlagen für unser Verständnis gelegt, wird der Zusammenhang zwischen der Mode in der Gesellschaft und dessen Art des Konsums hinterfragt. Dabei spielt die Produktivität der Frau eine große Rolle. Thorstein Veblen's "Theorie der feinen Leute" wird als Grundlage genutzt und Aspekte aus Georg Simmel's "Philosophie der Mode" hinzugezogen. Im Ausblick auf die jetzige Situation der Gesellschaft wird der Wandel der produktiven Rollenverteilung anhand der Familien-, Arbeits- und Haushaltsaufteilung aufgeschlüsselt.
