Meran allmälig immer mehr seiner Verdienste und Vorrechte als Landeshauptstadt zu berauben. Das Hauptschlm Tirol nämlich, die eigentliche bisherige Residenz, wurde Herm Friedrich ein allzu ungemüthlicher Aufenthalt, als die Hausmacht der Starkenberger und anderer seiner Gegner in fast allen Schlössem in der Runde sich niederliess und die Besorgnis erregen machte, dass eines Tages der geliebte Landesvater bei Nacht und Nebel oder auch bei hellem Sonnenschein in seiner eigenen Stammburg aufgehoben und davongetragen werden könnte. Mit den Fürsten kamen dann Meran bald auch die Landtage, hochansehnliche Acroter, der Adel soweit er Geld besass, und andere für das Wohl einer Landes. Hauptstadt, die Meran nominell allerdings noch lange blieb, unenb behrliche Dinge abhanden. Für Innsbruck sprach wohl auch noch der Umstand, dass sich für die Späteren Habsburger daselbst schon mit Rücksicht auf die vordcrösterreichischen Lande das Regieren bedeutend bequemer anliess, als in Meran. Unter Herzog Sigismund, der die Meraner und auch die Meranerinnen im Uebrigen wann in sein Herz geschlossen hatte, verlor Meran auch die Münze, sein riihmlich Erbtheil' das ihm die alten Grafen von Tirol hinterlassen, und damit war so ziemlich der letzte Rest landeshauptstädtischer Herrlichkeiten gefallen. Was übrig blieb, nvaren einige schön ge siegelte Freiheiten, zu welchen sich im Laufe der Zeiten auch noch die gesellte, kein Geld zu haben. Die Landesfürsten gingen an Innsbruck, die vielleicht noch einträglichcrcn 5tnpelpläitze und Kauf. Häuser an Bozen verloren Traurige Tage kamen uber Meran; der Krieg mit den Enga dinem des jahres 1499 kann als die blutige. Einleitung gelten. In der Schlacht auf der Malserhaide kamen aus Meran und Umgebung allein 150 Mann ums Leben.
