Dans Aurélia, Nerval retrace avec une admirable lucidité ses troubles mentaux et l'itinéraire spirituel qu'ils figurent. On notera en particulier la soudaine transfiguration du réel et le tragique désarroi qui envahit l'âme du poète, son émouvante sollicitude pour tous les ètres, ce don de pitié et de sympathie par lequel il ressent la souffrance universelle et enfin son inquiétude mystique et son désir pathétique de fixer contre des retours menaçants de l'angoisse, la paix que lui a apportée une vision bénéfique. Résumé Gérard par sa faute vient de perdre Jenny, qu'il s'appelle désormais Aurélia. Il porte en lui une image qui, nuit et jour, le hante. Un soir il croit distinguer son fantôme puis pendant son sommeil aperçoit un ètre mystérieux qui voltige péniblement. Cette hallucination est l'un des signes précurseurs de sa crise qui éclate en 1841. Au cours de cette crise commence l'épanchement dans la vie réelle. Il se croit transporté dans une maison Rhénane, puis dans les rues d'une ville mystérieuse et enfin chez son oncle à Mortefontaine. Cela lui fait croire que rien ne s'achève dans ce monde et qu'il existe un refuge aux espérances déçues. Il apprend bientôt la mort d'Aurélia qu'il divinise en imagination. Puis en 1851 dans un nouveau rève il voit surgir un esprit qui lui ressemble, un double et il croit qu'il vient lui enlever Aurélia. Il provoque un scandale à son réveil. Inquiétude entre le songe et la vie réelle. Et si ce double venait lui reprendre Aurélia pour le punir d'avoir idolâtréAurélia, définitivement perdue. Mais une nuit il a une nouvelle illumination: la déesse de ses rèves lui apparaît et lui dit "je suis la mème que ta mère, la mème que sous toutes les formes tu as toujours aimée." Puisque qu'Aurélia s'identifie avec sa mère et avec la vierge Chrétienne, il a pu l'aimer et le salut demeure possible. Ainsi rassuré, son zèle se transforme en pitié fraternelle. Dans un dernier rève Aurélia enfin retrouvée brille pour lui au firmament. Quelques extraits Première partie Le rève est une seconde vie. Je n'ai pu percer sans frémir ces portes d'ivoire ou de corne qui nous séparent du monde invisible. III- Ici a commencé pour moi ce que j'appellerai l'épanchement du songe dans la vie réelle. A dater de ce moment tout prenait parfois un aspect double, et cela, sans que le raisonnement manquât jamais de logique. IV- Un soir, je crus avec certitude, ètre transporté sur les bords du Rhin 2ème partie Une seconde fois perdue ! I-Tout est fini, tout est passé ! C'est moi maintenant qui doit mourir et mourir sans espoir. II-Je comprends me dis-je, j'ai préféré la créature au créateur; j'ai déifié mon amour et j'ai adoré selon les rites païens, celle dont le dernier soupir a été consacré au Christ. VI- Aussitôt je frémis en songeant que ce mystère mème pouvait ètre surpris. "Si l'électricité, me dis-je qui est le magnétisme des corps physiques, peut subir une direction qui lui impose des lois, à plus forte raison des esprits hostiles et tyranniques peuvent asservir les intelligences et se servir de leurs forces divisées dans un but de domination.
