Worin besteht das Endziel? Was ist der wahre Frieden? Wo findet sich das höchste Gut? Wie kann es erlangt werden? All diesen Fragen widmeten sich bereits in der Antike und Spätantike Philosophen und Theologen und kamen dabei zu meist höchst unterschiedlichen Argumenten und Antworten. Die Stoiker knüpften den finis boni an die Tugend und tugendhaftes Leben. Dabei sei die menschliche Seele bereits im Diesseits frei von allen Übeln und Affekten. So könne die vollkommene Glückseligkeit erlangt werden. Die Tugend gilt also als "höchste Leistung der menschlichen Seele," so Krieger. Aristoteles und Platon hingegen verbanden das höchste Gut mit dem vollkommen schönen, glückseligen Leben. Dabei wird die Wirkung der Tugend sowie der naturgemäßen Güter herangezogen. Epikur sah das höchste Gut in der voluptas - der Lust als Schmerlosigkeit. Die geistige Lust sei dabei wichtiger als die Körperliche. Auch Cicero hat sich in seinem Werk De finibus bonorum et malorum, wie der Titel bereits sagt, diesem Thema angenommen und diskutiert dabei die Ansichten Aristoteles, Epikurs und der Stoiker. Der Theologe und Kirchenvater Augustinus, einstiger Bischof von Hippo, hat sich - nach dem Fall Roms im Jahre 410 - in seinem Werk De civitate Dei der Frage nach dem summum bonum hingegeben. Vor allem im neunzehnen Buch diskutiert er die philosophischen Meinungen zu diesem Thema, die oben bereits kurz vorgestellt wurden, und begründet darauf die christliche Ansicht, dass das höchste Gut nicht, wie die Philosophen behaupten, in diesem Leben zu finden sei, sondern erst im Jenseits, dem ewigen Leben, erlangt werden könne.
