Genauer, als wohl bisher geschehen ist, kennen lernt (i, 1, S. Ein seltenes Talent aber geh�rt dazu, dem Gen�ge zu thun, was von einem solchen Uebersetzer und Darsteller Platonischer Kunst gefordert werden muss; und wird wohl unter den Kennern dar�ber mehr als eine Stimme sein, dass in diesem Zeitalter Schleiermacher der Einzige war, der, unbek�mmert um die Vorg�nger (vorrede S. III), dieses Werk angreifen konnte? Er, dem man nicht mit Unrecht �hnlichen Geist beigemessen hat, der in eigenen ischriften �hnliche dialektische Kunst, von Besonnenheit sanft gez�gelte Phan tasie, ferner �hnliche Beredsamkeit und Gewalt uber Stoff und Darstellung, vielseitige Gewandtheit und feine Bildung des Sinnes beweiset: so dass man von ihm behaupten kann, was als die vollg�ltige Probe des Verstehens anzusehen ist, er w�rde ahnliche Gebilde haben schaffen k�nnen. Kein Philolog ztvar von Profession, hat er also auch nicht die bis ins Speciellste gehende Kenntniss denalterthumslmmle; wie k�nnte ein so umfassender Mann die einzelne Virtuosit�t so hervorstechend ausgebildet haben? Aber das Alterthum selbst doch kennet er; ungemeine Einsicht in Hellenische Sprache und Sitte und ganz neue Resultateder scharfsinnigsten phi lologischen Kritik sehen wir hier und anderw�rts von ihm, und im freundlichen Vereine M�nner, wie Spalding und Heindorf (verr. S. V), welchen die Liebe zu ihrer Kunst die kleine M�he reichlich belohnt. Gestehen wir rund heraus, was wir denken: noch Niemand hat den Platon so voll st�ndig selbst verstanden und Andere verstehen gelehrt, wie dieser Mann, welcher bei seltener Umfassung des H�chsten, mit nicht geringerer Sorgsamkeit auch das Kleinste nicht verschm�ht: ein Talent, das in wenigen Gelehrten ausgebildet, ein Gl�ck, das wenigen Gegenst�nden zu Gute gekommen ist, w�hrend die meisten mit zu 1mbesonnener Ueberspannung, oder mit zu beschrankter N �chternheit behandelt werden sind. Ob ein solcher wohl der Anweisung bedurfte, die ein ziem lich Unw�rdiger einst geben wollte, wie ein geistvoller Hellene 84 von einem geistvollen Deutschen zu �bersetzen sei? Die Einrichtung des Buches ist bekannt; vor allem ragt die allgemeine Einleitung mit den einzelnen hervor: zudieser Quelle lasset uns hingehen, ihr Philologen; verstehen wir das Ganze nicht, wozu frommt uns das Einzelne? Dan ken wir ihm, dass er das Verst�ndniss gelost hat, welches zwei Jahrtausende so nicht l�sen konnten: von der Zukunft l�sst sich weder Gutes noch B�ses verb�rgen; aber h�tte er sich ihrer nicht angenommen, wer weiss, wie lange die Phi lologen noch nach dem Schl�ssel zum Platon, wie die A1 men nach Brod h�tten gehen m�ssen? Aber auch er selbst ist nicht leicht zu verstehen, und auch darin, und dass er so vielfach missverstanden wird, gleicht er seinem Urbilde (s. Wenn doch nicht dasselbe auch mit diesen Einleitun gen der Fall w�re, und dass doch vor allen auch wir vor diesem Unheil bewahrt sein m�gen! Zugleich erbitten wir uns die doppelte Verg�nstigrmg, diesen Einleitungen, da sie f�r den Fortschritt der Wissenschaft das Wichtigste, f�r das Studium das Schwerste in dem Buche sind, die geb�hrende Ausf�hrlichkeit widmen, sodann, was wir f�r unstatthaft halten, wenn es uns wichtig genug d�nkte, den Einfluss, welchen solche Autorit�t haben k�nnte, st�rker zu bek�mpfen, einer genauern Untersuchung unterwerfen zu d�rfen.
