Und seine Gönner, der Herzog von Brabant und seine ehemals königliche Schwester Beatrix, finanzieren zu diesem Zweck einen mehrwöchigen Studienaufenthalt in der noch jungen Universität Oxford. Doch was Carolus - selbst Mönch aus dem wallisischen St. Maurice - dann auf seiner Reise durch den Norden Frankreichs, durch England und wieder zurück nach Köln zu sehen bekommt, das sprengt - buchstäblich - sein Vorstellungsvermögen. Vom ersten Schiesspulver bis hin zu wertvollen Steinen und exotischen Familienverhältnissen, durch schwere Stürme und wild saufende Bauleute an den soeben entstehenden ersten gotischen Kathedralen, bis hin zum Leben und Leiden der Juden in der Diaspora, der Zerstreuung, und ihrem immerwährenden Wunsch nach Heimkehr - des jungen Carolus Augen gehen immer mehr weg von den sichtbaren Dingen, zu den "grossen", den unsichtbaren. Und als er schliesslich den später zu grösster Berühmtheit gelangenden Thomas von Aquin als Mitstudenten und Freund in Köln trifft, entspinnt sich geradezu ein innerer Kampf um die tiefsten Dinge des Lebens: Sein und Zeit und Gott und Bestimmung.
